Embrace the Ordinary
A Note from Keirstin:
Summer is hands down my favorite season. I love the time at home with my family, summer heat, break in routine, the endless hours in the water, trips to the beach… I love summer.
But, fall has a special place in my heart, too.
I love being able to fall back into regular rhythms and everything to feel consistent.
The first day of fall is this week. The change of season will likely mean sipping on a warm cup of coffee while enjoying a cool morning breeze, spending Saturday mornings raking leaves, and cheering on your favorite football team. My encouragement to you is to embrace the ordinary this week.
I imagine that many of us envision discipleship to mean we have to gather the entire family together for a nightly Bible study that includes moments of worship, Scripture reading, discussion questions, and a time of prayer.
What we forget is that discipleship is also talking about God in the car, praying while in the pick up line, reminding your child that God is with him before a test, talking about living at peace during a sibling tiff, and thanking God for the sunrise on the way to school.
You don’t have to create more moments for discipleship. You can start noticing the moments you already have.
Let’s make Sunday morning a Saturday night decision together.
Weekly Challenge
This evening, make sure that everyone prepares their body for worship; clothes picked out, bags prepared, alarms set, etc. After that is done, cozy up together to prepare hearts for worship by reading the Bible together, reviewing expectations for worship, and praying. Then, take a moment to reflect on where everyone saw God in the ordinary moments of the last week. Set that as a framework for the week to come.
Family Conversation Starter
What is one thing you would tell a friend about what you heard today?
One simple question can lead to deeper conversation.
Scripture for the Week
This is the day the LORD has made; let’s rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
Embrace the ordinary moments of the week for unplanned discipleship.
A Prayer for Your Family
Lord, You are so good. You are kind and loving, generous and patient. You are Creator and Protector. Thank You! Thank You for the change of seasons; all the memories we made this summer and what is to come this fall. Help us to see where You are in the sunrise, on walks, practicing for the game, studying for the test, driving to work, and every other ordinary moment You bless us with. Amen.
