The Shema
“Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.” Deuteronomy 6:4-9

This verse, known as the shema is the core verse in to The Night Before… the fuel to our fire.

Moses is making it clear that the Lord is calling parents to be the primary faith trainers of their children in this passage. This passage communicates that discipleship is a way of life, not a box to check once a week. We are called to tell our children about the things of the Lord when we sit at home… as we are going to and from… when we are going to be… and when we are waking up…

The discipleship of our children does not happen by accident. It takes purpose, intentionality, and a plan. It should involve unity with your spouse and involvement in biblical community.

Family Discipleship doesn’t happen by accident.

The Church
The Church is a resource, but it cannot replace your role as the spiritual leader of the children God has entrusted to you. In Ephesians 4:12, Paul reminds us that church leaders exist to equip the saints, God’s people, for the work of ministry. Parents are not spectators in their children’s spiritual growth.

The Church is designed to link arms with parents by providing sound teaching, biblical community, and opportunities to serve. When The Church functions in this manner, and parents embrace their role as primary faith trainers, everyone flourishes.

The Church is a gift, but it was never intended to carry what God designed the home to lead.
