Establishing Intentional Rhythms

A Note from Keirstin:
It is “Back to School” season. For my family, that means earlier bedtimes and finding our way back to consistency. I enjoy ensuring that our home has systems and rhythms in place to help us function well; menus, checklists, color-coded calendars…

For some, finding a rhythm is dreadful. That would be my husband. Last week as we were preparing for Sunday morning worship on Saturday, I asked him when he was setting his alarm for. He said 6:50. This was alarmingly early to me. I was so confused. I asked him why so early. He said, “It was the easiest time to set.” I am still boggled by that statement. No rhyme or reason… just because 6:50 was easy.

Whether you find yourself loathing or loving routine, our children need it. Children thrive knowing what to anticipate.

As you are finding your new rhythms with sports schedules, school events, church activities, and more, let me encourage you not to forget to prioritize studying the Word of God individually and as a family. If you wait for the time to appear, you might not find it. If you intentionally add it to your rhythms, you will be blessed.

Let’s make Sunday morning a Saturday night decision together.

Weekly Challenge

Discussing Sunday morning expectations on Saturday is a great way to ensure that everyone in the family is on the same page about what is expected of them at church.

If you’ve never considered appropriate expectations, here are a few that work well for our family:

  1. Stand during the song portion of worship

  2. Sit with your Bible and journal open during the preaching portion of worship

  3. No restroom breaks.

  4. Snacks are only during sitting time.

Family Conversation Starter

Where did you see Jesus in the text we studied today?

One simple question can lead to deeper conversation.

Scripture for the Week

“But if it doesn’t please you to worship the LORD, choose for yourselves today: which will you worship - the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

Consider this week whether your life resembles one that worships the LORD or the gods of this day.

A Prayer for Your Family

Lord, thank You for the blessing of inconsistent summer days that are full of memories. Thank You for school days with rhythm. Guide our schedules and show us how to balance prioritizing our worship to You, jobs, school, and hobbies. Let us not lose sight of the things You are calling us to prioritize while we are searching for the things we want to prioritize. Amen.
